SPRING 2025 A – An introduction to Talk for Writing in special education and alternative provision

For SEND teachers in EYs, KS1, KS2 and secondary schools

What the training will cover

This training will provide a coherent system for teaching writing and developing expressive communication and language using the Talk for Writing approach with SEND children.

Packed with practical, inclusive strategies, the sessions will:

* explore how to harness pupils’ receptive communication and language using quality literature to immerse them in sensory, concrete and experiential learning;

* provide teachers with ideas for developing expressive communication and language;

* explore how to scaffold learning to support pupils in the writing process;

* explore how to use a 5-part structure to craft accessible model texts for differing pupil needs.

Costs

Price per delegate for four sessions of training is £198+VAT (which equates to £49.50 per training session).

Discount: 10% discount on ALL places when a school books more than one person on the same course. Meaning two delegates cost £356.40 (which equates to £44.55 per person, per session).

How the online training works

Training will take place via Zoom over four sessions. Delegates will need to attend ALL four of these sessions as there will be gap tasks between each session. Each delegate will need their own desktop or laptop computer with a working camera. There are further details on this PDF.

Jane Ralphs

Jane has worked at a senior level in education for more than a decade, including eight years as Vice Principal and Head of Educational Standards at a large primary school. Jamie Thomas

Jamie is the former Deputy Head of Warren Road School in Kent. He led and delivered whole-school change by embedding Talk for Writing and Talk for Reading across the school. The Talk for Reading and Writing approaches proved to be the most successful initiative the school has ever undertaken with progress measures soaring in reading, writing and GPS.
